Gelatin Mix for Beer Clarity

Page content

Description

This is to assist with clarification of a 18 to 23 liter batch of beer by adding gelitin to the fermented beer. The beer is not carbonated at this stage.

IMPORTANT: Non-Vegetarian!

By adding this to the beer the beer is no longer vegetarian. Be a good person and inform the drinkers.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 tsp Unflavored Gelatin Powder
  • 60 ml Filtered water (room temperature) [1]

Equipment

  • Thermometer
  • Microwavable container, preferably not plastic

Steps (Clarification)

  1. Rinse the container with filtered water
  2. Fill the container with 60ml of filtered water
  3. Sprinkle the gelatin over the water and place in microwave[2]. Do not turn the microwave on, just let it stand there for 5 minutes
  4. Using the thermometer, stir the solution
  5. Nuke at full power for 15 seconds
  6. Stir the solution with the thermometer
  7. Take a temperature reading. You want the liquid to be between 62 and 66 Celcius
  8. Repeat the heating steps if required. Use smaller time increments to not overheat the mix
  9. Add the mix to the keg
  10. Shake the keg to allow the mixture to be dissolved in the full batch
  11. Connect and apply low CO2 pressure to the beer (1 bar | 10 psi)
  12. Cool to serving temperature
  13. Leave for between 24 and 48 hours

The gelatin would have settled to be bottom by now. This needs to be poured out before serving the beer.

  1. Connect a tap that does not easily get clogged, or can easily be disconnected and cleaned
  2. Reduce the CO2 pressure
  3. Pour beer into a vessel in small bursts, looking at the clarity of the beer
  4. When the beer starts pouring clear, give the keg a small tilt/shake to get the extra gelatin to move towards the bottom/outlet
  5. Wait 10 minutes
  6. Pour beer into a vessel in small bursts, looking at the clarity of the beer
  7. Disconnect the tap
  8. Continue with your carbonation process
  9. The first pour will still have some residue, so bear that in mind.

Footnotes

[1] Filtered water is de-chloronated water. Bottled water is fine. Tap water that passed through a charcoal filter is fine.

[2] Microwave ovens are (usually) one of the cleanest places in a house, because the microwaves kill most(?) bacteria and virii.
